Funny story. My wife and I were riding a double decker bus in London on our way to work as we used to do. I had persistently smelled a foul odor and had attributed it to the bus (it was public transport, after all), since that's where I usually smelled the offending scent.

Then I leaned down and smelled her coat. YUCK!!! It was her coat, no doubt about it. My wife was French, and had likely bought her leather coat from a vendor in the flea market outside of town where coats are extremely cheap. Those vendors are almost all of North African descent, and probably got their goods from North Africa on the cheap. The chances are very high that the leather originated from the very tannery you mention here. *cue puke noise*

Now I *always* smell leather before I buy it. I'm tempted to wash it a few thousand times, too, especially after reading your great post. :)
